Barrie, city in Simcoe County, southern Ontario, Canada,
on Kempenfelt Bay, an arm of Lake Simcoe. Barrie is in the Toronto metropolitan area. Its diverse economy includes a strong
tourism sector and the manufacture of automotive parts, plastics, metal products, telecommunications equipment, and industrial
automation systems. The high-tech, service, and health and medical sectors have increased in importance. The city is served by
Lake Simcoe Regional Airport and is home to Georgian College. Points of interest include the Simcoe County Museum; the MacLaren
Art Centre; the Canadian Forces Base Borden Military Museum; and Kempenfelt Bay, the site of many water activities, such as boat
cruises. Among the city's annual events are Winterfest, held in February, and Kempenfest, an arts and crafts festival held in
July. Barrie is located in an area formerly inhabited by the Huron and Ojibwa First Nations; the British settled the community in
the early 1800s. It is named for British Commodore Robert Barrie. Barrie incorporated as a city in 1959. During the 1990s a new
hospital, an entertainment center, and a library opened.
