So you know now the dangers of study timetables. What is the most important thing you need to do then, to ensure study success?

What you need to do is simple:

  1. Pick your subject. Take stock of what you need to cover. Count the number of chapters, or topics in your syllabus, or exam questions on your paper that need to cover. Count it all up.
  2. Count the number of weeks you have until your deadline. (An exam probably.) Now, take some off the end as a safety net for problem chapters or unpredictable obstacles.
  3. Divide the number of chapters or topics by the number of weeks you calculated above. Now, you have your bottom line. This is the number of chapters you need to cover each week.
  4. Write out a rough chart, with the number and date of each week in the first column, the chapters or topics to be covered in the second, space to tick them off the list in the next column and finally, a column for notes about problems encountered or topics that need a closer look. Keep it rough and quick; don`t procrastinate by making it pretty!
  5. The final column can be used when you have a problem finishing a section. There will be times when you finish a section early and these spare moments can be used to go over the difficult ones in the final column. Alternatively, they can be dealt with in the time allocated at the end of your list as a safety net.
  6. Get started - as soon as you finish the chart! Don`t wait for your next study session or you will lose momentum. Get that first topic ticked off your list as soon as you can - it`s a great feeling when you do!

Working out a study chart like this will alleviate anxiety immediately. You no longer have a mountain of work to face, just this week`s topic. As long as you keep covering your weekly quota, you know the rest will be taken care of eventually and you will see the progress in front of your eyes as you tick each topic off the list.

Your study time will be guided by the amount of work done rather than time spent, and you will find yourself finishing it quicker to give yourself the free time you deserve. No more time wasting or day-dreaming!

Try it today! You won`t be sorry.
